Baby teeth are also known as primary teeth and have a very important role in the oral development of children. From the time they emerge to their fall, these temporary teeth can significantly influence the oral health and well-being of the little ones in the house.

What are baby teeth?

Baby teeth are the first teeth to grow in babies’ mouths. They are in the mouth in a short period of time, until they end up being replaced by definitive teeth.

The function of these teeth is to save space for when adult teeth grow, which begin to grow in the gums of the smallest. The milk teeth that are coming out correctly, will benefit in the eruption of the teeth already definitive.

Also, primary teeth have a whiter color than those already permanent, hence they are called “milk”

Birth of the baby teeth

The rash of these teeth varies from each baby, normally starting at six months when the first teeth begin to be born.

Normally, the lower incisors are the first four teeth that appear and from month number nine usually leave the upper central incisors in the newborn. When they reach fifteen months, the upper and lower molars come out and when they reach two years, the second temporal molars are born. From this age, we recommend you start taking your child to the dentist.

The process of erupting baby teeth can be delayed until the end of two and a half years. And it is at 6 years of age when the final molars come out.

Differences between primary and permanent teeth

From birth to growth, we have two different dental groups in our lives, milk and permanent. But there are some differences between the two:

Number of teeth

Mainly, the clearest difference is the number of teeth. When we are children, we have a total of 20 baby teeth that eventually fall out so that 32 adult permanent teeth can emerge.

As the smaller ones grow, so does their jaw and that’s when their baby teeth separate and generate more space for the permanent teeth. But if you see that growing adult parts do not look well placed or aligned you can go to a child orthodontist.

Growth of teeth

The first teeth appear from six months to two years of the child’s life. Although this can vary, since some little ones may have the first rash of the teeth in almost a year, do not worry because it is normal. On the other hand, the permanent teeth come out from six years of age until 11 – 12 years of age.

Shape of the teeth

Baby teeth tend to be smaller than adult teeth. This is because children have a smaller jaw. Likewise, the size of the teeth goes along with knowing how to chew solid foods.

The permanent teeth are larger, because when the child grows it has a larger jaw to store them.

It is very important to have good oral hygiene for our child to have a good growth of both baby teeth and permanent ones. So it is advisable to brush your baby teeth at least once a day.

At Gross Dentists, we know the importance of having good oral health from a young age. Therefore, in our dental clinic in Malaga, we have an expert team in the care of the mouth of your little one.
