Whether or not they are the best option depends on the bone and each patient’s individual characteristics, and this can only be determined after an individual assessment.

Monophase implants: What are they?

With a conventional implant, two components are used: the implant itself, which is placed in the bone, and the abutment, which is screwed in later to support the crown. A monophase implant combines both into a single piece. The lower part sits inside the bone, while the upper part extends above the gum, ready to support the prosthesis.

This eliminates the connecting screw and the small gap between the two components, a space where plaque can accumulate. It also shortens the treatment, as there is no second stage to place the abutment.

The downside is that the implant is designed with its final position and angle from the outset, leaving no room to adjust them afterwards. This is why it requires very precise planning.

Structural comparison between a traditional two-piece implant and a single-piece monophase implant.

When are they recommended?

The key factor is the bone: its quality and volume. Since the implant cannot be repositioned once it has integrated, the bone must provide good anchorage from day one. In addition to the bone, other factors are also assessed:

Gum health.

The position of neighbouring teeth.

The patient’s bite.

To check this, a study using digital radiology and 3D planning is carried out. This makes it possible to calculate the exact position of the implant and confirm whether a monophase implant is the right option or whether another system would be more suitable.

Once this assessment has been completed, these are the cases in which they are usually recommended:

Replacing one or several teeth in areas with sufficient bone volume.

Restorations where the aim is to fit a temporary prosthesis within a short period of time.

Supporting fixed prostheses in people who have lost many teeth.

Advantages of monophase implants

The advantages of this type of implant are as follows:

1. A simple procedure

Since there is no abutment to place in a second stage, the surgery is simpler. In selected cases, there is less manipulation of the tissues and the recovery period is more comfortable. Many patients also appreciate having to undergo surgery only once for this part of the treatment.

2. Fewer visits to the clinic

Without the abutment connection stage, fewer appointments are needed to complete the restoration. This is particularly convenient for people with limited time or those who live far away. Follow-up appointments are still necessary, but they are limited to checking that the implant is integrating properly and that the prosthesis is working as it should.

3. Stability from day one

As it is a single piece, the implant is secured to the bone from the moment it is placed and does not depend on any subsequent connection. This stability makes it possible, when the case allows, to fit a temporary prosthesis soon after the procedure. The patient can regain the function and appearance of their smile without having to spend as much time with a gap.

4. Easier cleaning

With fewer components and no joints, there are fewer areas where food debris and bacteria can accumulate. This makes daily hygiene easier, helps keep the gums healthy and makes brushing more comfortable, as it is easier to reach the entire surface.

5. Care after placement

Easier cleaning does not mean that the implant requires no care. You should follow the hygiene instructions provided by your dentist and use the toothbrushes and other cleaning aids they recommend. During the first few weeks, it is advisable to avoid chewing forcefully on the operated area.

Regular check-ups complete the care routine. They help monitor the condition of the gums and bone and detect any warning signs before they develop into a more serious problem.

Dental implants in Málaga and Torremolinos

At Gross Dentistas Málaga, we have been carrying out dental implant treatments for years.
