Does my child need orthodontics?

One of the questions when our children begin to change their baby teeth for the adult ones is: will they need orthodontics? All around us, more and more children wear braces and the truth is that children’s orthodontics saves time and money: aligning teeth in adulthood is much more expensive.

In addition, certain problems that are solved with orthodontics in the childhood require more complex surgical treatments when teeth are completely developed. However, it doesn’t mean that adults can’t wear braces too.

Each case is different, but as a general rule, orthodontics is recommended between 11 and 13 years of age in girls and between 12 and 14 in boys. Of course, orthodontics is usually the last step in a series of visits to the pediatric dentist.

Depending on their problem, many children need previously another type of appliance: a fixed or removable dental expander, removable appliances to correct maxillary postures, other preventatives to guide the teeth to their correct position…

For this reason, and although it is necessary to visit the dentist from the age of two, we should think about orthodontic treatments from the age of six or seven. That is, when the adult teeth begin to appear.
