Care during and after teeth whitening: what you should do

A fairly common mistake after teeth whitening is thinking that all the work is already done. Many people leave the clinic and, within a few hours, go back to drinking coffee, wine, or consuming foods with colorants without realizing that this can directly affect the result. This type of oversight is more common than it seems and, in many cases, shortens the duration of the treatment.

The importance of care during and after teeth whitening

Teeth whitening is not a permanent treatment. Its success does not depend only on the procedure itself, but also on how the teeth are cared for afterward. During the first hours and days, the enamel is more permeable, which means it is easier for it to absorb external pigments.

If some basic guidelines are not followed, the achieved shade can be lost quickly. This creates frustration and, in some cases, the need to repeat the treatment sooner than expected. That is why taking care of habits after whitening is key to maintaining the result for as long as possible.

In addition, during the process, discomfort such as tooth sensitivity may appear. This is normal, but it also requires certain care to prevent it from getting worse. Using suitable products and avoiding sudden temperature changes helps make this phase more manageable.

Care during and after teeth whitening

After whitening, there are a series of clear recommendations that should be followed from the very beginning.

Avoid foods and drinks with colorants

For at least 48–72 hours, it is important to avoid dark or highly pigmented foods. This includes coffee, tea, red wine, cola drinks, sauces such as tomato or soy, and fruits like berries.

Ideally, you should follow a “white” diet: rice, chicken, white fish, pasta, bread, dairy products… Anything that cannot stain the enamel. This point is key because it is when the tooth is most vulnerable.

Take care of oral hygiene without overdoing it

Maintaining good hygiene is essential, but without overdoing it. Brushing after every meal with a mild toothpaste helps maintain the result, but it is not advisable to do it too forcefully or to use abrasive products.

It is also useful to complement with dental floss and, if the dentist recommends it, specific mouthwashes for sensitive teeth. Avoiding whitening toothpastes right after the treatment is also important.

Control tooth sensitivity

It is quite common to notice sensitivity after whitening. To reduce it, it is advisable to avoid very cold or very hot foods for a few days. Desensitizing toothpastes can also be used.

If the discomfort is intense or does not go away, it is best to consult it. Forcing the teeth in that condition can worsen the situation.

Avoid tobacco

Tobacco not only affects general health, it is also one of the main reasons why teeth become darker again. After whitening, smoking accelerates the loss of the achieved effect.

Reducing or avoiding its consumption, especially in the first few days, makes a big difference in the final result.

Keep up with check-ups and follow professional advice

Each case is different. That is why following the dentist’s instructions is essential. In some cases, maintenance trays or specific products are recommended to prolong the whitening effect.

If you notice anything out of the ordinary, go to the dentist

If strong discomfort, persistent pain, or any change that does not match what is expected appears, it is best not to wait and to visit your dentist. A timely check-up prevents further complications.
