7 mistakes when brushing your teeth

Maintaining good oral hygiene is essential for healthy teeth and gums, preventing cavities, and avoiding more serious problems like gingivitis. Many people think that brushing quickly is enough, but the reality is that the way we brush is just as important as the frequency. Small daily mistakes can go unnoticed and end up affecting our oral health in the long term.

The importance of brushing your teeth correctly

Brushing your teeth correctly is not just a matter of aesthetics or having a white smile; it is a fundamental pillar for the overall health of our mouth. Proper technique removes plaque and food debris, preventing the formation of cavities, gum disease, and bad breath.

When brushing is neglected or done incorrectly, even brushing several times a day may be insufficient and allow harmful bacteria to accumulate, affecting the teeth and gums over time.

Additionally, good brushing helps protect tooth enamel and maintain strong gums. Adopting proper oral hygiene habits from an early age reduces the need for complex treatments in the future and promotes stable oral health.

Common mistakes when brushing your teeth

Brushing your teeth seems simple, but there are habits that can harm rather than help without us realizing it. Here are the most common mistakes and how to correct them practically:

Brushing too hard

Applying too much pressure does not clean the teeth better; on the contrary, it can wear down enamel and cause gum recession, leaving roots exposed and increasing sensitivity. To avoid this, use gentle circular movements at a 45-degree angle to the gums, letting the brush do the work without pressing too hard.

Using a hard or unsuitable toothbrush

A toothbrush that is too firm can damage gums and sensitive areas. It is ideal to choose soft or medium bristles and a head that allows you to reach all areas of the mouth. Change your toothbrush every 2–3 months or sooner if the bristles are worn to maintain effective cleaning and avoid accumulated bacteria.

Using too much toothpaste

Using more toothpaste does not improve cleaning. A pea-sized amount is sufficient. This prevents excessive foam that can cause you to stop brushing too soon and allows fluoride to act properly to protect your teeth.

Brushing too quickly or not long enough

Many people finish brushing in less than a minute. For complete cleaning, dedicate at least two minutes, dividing the mouth into four zones and making sure to cover all surfaces: outer, inner, and chewing surfaces.

Neglecting the inner surfaces of teeth, the tongue, or hard-to-reach areas

Some people overlook these areas, allowing plaque to accumulate, causing bad breath and gum problems. Make sure to brush the inner surfaces of the teeth and the surface of the tongue, and complement with dental floss or interdental brushes at least once a day to keep these areas clean.

Rinsing excessively after brushing

Rinsing with too much water immediately after brushing removes the fluoride that protects the teeth. To take advantage of its protective effect, a small rinse is enough, or simply spit out the excess paste without rinsing too much.

Not using interdental cleaning

The regular toothbrush does not reach between teeth, where plaque and food debris can accumulate, causing cavities and gum problems. To prevent this, use dental floss or interdental brushes at least once a day. This completes cleaning and keeps the spaces between teeth healthy.

By correcting these mistakes and applying the advice mentioned, your brushing will be much more effective, and you will take care of your smile without complications.
