Problems with the gum recession

Before knowing what is gum grafting, its types and recovery recommendations, it is essential to mention the problems of gum recession.

Gum recession corresponds to the loss of gum that leaves the root of the tooth visible. Therefore, we can say that the aspect that originates in the mouth is that the gum line is at a higher height than usual.

In this type of situation, it is extremely important to go to a good dentist to find out what caused it. In this sense, the factors that can trigger gum recession are several: Poor oral hygiene habits, bruxism, tobacco, among others.

But… what effects does the gum recession cause on the affected person? This gum elevation can provide greater sensitivity to cold, inflammation of tissue, discomfort during the time of brushing, dental mobility, damage the aesthetics of the smile, etc.

What is gum grafting?

Now that you know more about the problems of gum recession, it is the ideal time to reveal what is gum grafting.

The gum graft, also called periodontal plastic surgery, is a solution to the problem of gum recession, specifically an intervention that involves extracting a small amount of soft tissue and placing it in the retracted area.

In addition, it should be noted that it corresponds to a minimally invasive technique, which does not cause pain in the patient and does not affect his health.

What types of gum grafts exist?

Gum grafts can be divided into the three groups shown below:

Connective tissue grafts

This guy’s the most used. An incision is made inside the palate to obtain the connective tissue from it, then this tissue is placed in the retracted gum, being completely covered.

Free grafts

It is obtained directly from the palate, including internal tissue and skin. After this, it is placed on the exposed root without covering it.

Pedicled grafts

In this case, the gum moves from the areas neighbouring the affected.

Recommendations for the recovery of this intervention

Once the intervention is performed it is important to follow the following recommendations:

  • Place ice in the affected area.
  • During the first few days you must follow a diet based on soft, warm or cold foods.
  • Do not rinse the area the same day as the procedure.
  • During the first 24 hours should not remove the protector of the palate.
  • Brushing should be avoided in the intervened area, as this could open the points.
  • You don’t have to pull your lip to see the graft.
  • Important physical activities should be avoided.
  • You should not smoke.
  • It is essential to follow the medication prescribed by the specialist.
