Different gum problems

The gums are a fundamental part of our oral health and, although we sometimes don’t pay them much attention, any problem in them can affect our mouth and our daily comfort. Taking care of them and knowing the warning signs is key to keeping teeth and gums healthy.
Discover the different types of gum problems you may have if you don’t take proper care of them.

Symptoms of gum problems

Detecting gum problems in time allows us to act before they become something more serious. The signs may be subtle at first, but over time they become more evident. Some of the most frequent symptoms are:

  • Bleeding when brushing or flossing: It is not normal for gums to bleed, even with gentle brushing. This symptom usually indicates inflammation or irritation in the gingival tissues.
  • Red, sensitive, or swollen gums: Healthy gums are firm and pink, not white or red. When they become red or inflamed, it may be a sign of gingivitis or periodontitis.
  • Persistent bad breath: Although it can have other causes, continuous bad breath may be related to gum infections that accumulate bacteria.
  • Gum recession: When the gums recede and expose part of the tooth root, dental sensitivity increases and the risk of cavities in that area also rises.
  • Sensitivity or pain when chewing: Gum inflammation can make eating uncomfortable, especially with hard, cold, or very hot foods.

Paying attention to these symptoms and not ignoring them is important. Many people think that bleeding when brushing is normal, but it is one of the first signs of problems that should be treated as soon as possible.

Gum problems

There are different types of gum problems, ranging from mild to severe, depending on the condition of the tissues and how long they are left untreated.

Gingivitis

Gingivitis is the most common and mild form of gum disease. It is characterized by inflammation, redness, and bleeding when brushing. It is often reversible if daily oral hygiene is improved and professional cleaning is performed. However, if left untreated, it can progress into a more serious disease such as periodontitis.

Periodontitis

Periodontitis is the progression of gingivitis and affects the supporting tissues of the teeth, including the bone that holds them. It can cause tooth mobility and even tooth loss. This disease requires more intensive treatment, including deep cleanings, scaling, and sometimes surgical intervention to restore gum health.

Gum recession

Gum recession occurs when the gums recede, leaving the tooth root exposed. This not only causes sensitivity but also increases vulnerability to root cavities and aesthetic problems. Recession may be caused by aggressive brushing, bruxism, or chronic periodontal diseases. In this case, a graft may be necessary.

Peri-implantitis

In people with dental implants, peri-implantitis affects the tissues around the implant and may compromise its stability. It is a serious problem that requires professional monitoring and, at times, surgical procedures to protect the implant.
