Dental hypoplasia: causes, symptoms and treatments

Dental hypoplasia is an alteration in the formation of enamel that affects both children and adults, compromising the aesthetics and health of the teeth. It is characterized by an insufficient amount of enamel, which makes the dental surface more vulnerable to caries, fractures and tenderness. From our dental clinic in Malaga, we know that detecting it on time and applying a proper treatment is essential to maintain a healthy and functional smile over time.

What is dental hypoplasia and why does it occur?

Dental hypoplasia occurs when, during tooth development, enamel is not formed properly or is formed in a smaller amount. This incomplete or deficient enamel leaves the dental piece unprotected against external factors such as bacteria, temperature changes or mechanical impacts.

The causes of dental hypoplasia are varied. May be the result of genetic factors, infectious diseases during childhood, malnutrition, trauma or exposure to certain drugs during dental training. It is also commonly found in milk teeth and permanent teeth, affecting both the aesthetics and functionality of the mouth.

In some cases, the enamel alteration is mild and barely noticeable, while in others it can manifest itself as white, brown spots or even visible loss of part of the dental tissue. Each case must be assessed individually to determine the best form of intervention.

Main symptoms of dental hypoplasia

There are different symptoms of this problem, but the main ones are:

  • Spots on the teeth: the appearance of white, yellow or brown spots in the enamel is one of the most visible signs. These stains are permanent and do not disappear with regular dental hygiene.
  • Irregular tooth surface: affected teeth have a rough texture or with small grooves and cavities. This irregularity facilitates the build-up of plaque and complicates daily cleaning.
  • Tooth sensitivity: people with hypoplasia often experience sensitivity to cold, heat or sweet foods. This is due to the lower protection of the enamel against external stimuli.
  • Increased susceptibility to cavities: with less protective enamel, teeth are much more vulnerable to the action of bacteria. This significantly increases the risk of developing early caries.
  • Tooth fragility: poor enamel can cause teeth to fracture or wear out more easily. This fragility compromises both the aesthetics and functionality of the teething.

Most recommended treatments for dental hypoplasia

The treatment of dental hypoplasia depends on the degree of involvement and the general state of dentition. When damage is mild, conservative procedures such as sealants or composite resins may be used to protect the enamel and improve the appearance of the tooth. These treatments are simple, minimally invasive and offer an immediate aesthetic solution.

In moderate or severe cases, more complete reconstructions using porcelain veneers or dental crowns may be necessary, especially if the dental structure is compromised. These restorations not only restore aesthetics to the tooth, but also strengthen its resistance against future fractures or wear. Remineralization of enamel by topical applications of fluoride is another strategy used to strengthen affected teeth, although its effectiveness depends on the degree of hypoplasia present.
