What is bruxism? Symptoms, consequences, treatment and solutions

Bruxism is a common condition characterized by the involuntary habit of clenching or grinding the teeth, either during the day or while sleeping. Although it often goes unnoticed, it can have significant consequences for both dental and general health if not treated in time.

In this article, we’ll tell you everything you need to know about bruxism, so you can visit your trusted dentist and find a solution to this problem.

What is bruxism?

You’ve probably heard before what bruxism is, but for those who don’t know, you should be aware that this condition involves unconsciously clenching the jaw and grinding the teeth, which causes them to wear down. It is a problem that affects approximately 70% of the population in Spain, according to studies.

The person suffering from bruxism is often unaware of it, as it is usually others who inform them—either because they have shared a bed and heard the teeth grinding, or their dentist has noticed during a check-up that the teeth are somewhat worn down.

Moreover, it is important to note that there are two types of bruxism:

  • Daytime bruxism, characterized by emotions such as stress, anxiety, tension, or even frustration. It can become a habit in situations of extreme concentration.
  • Nighttime bruxism, which is the most common type, may be related to sleep disturbances or even chewing during sleep.

Common symptoms and consequences of bruxism

As we mentioned earlier, some people become aware that they have bruxism because someone else has pointed it out, even if it’s just the fact that they grind their teeth. But there are many other symptoms that can indicate this problem:

  • Clenching or grinding the teeth so strongly that it can wake the person sleeping next to us.
  • Tooth enamel is worn down, making it possible to see the deeper layers of the teeth.
  • The jaw muscles feel more rigid and tired.
  • Inflammation or pain in the jaw area, neck, or face.

Like any other problem that is not treated in time, there are also consequences, which are also symptoms of bruxism:

  • Increased dental sensitivity or pain throughout the mouth.
  • Headaches that usually start in the temples.
  • In some cases, sleep disturbances due to jaw pain.

Treatment for bruxism

There are different treatments for bruxism, which must be supervised by a trusted dentist, as they are the experts who will know the best option for your specific case. The most common treatments are:

  • Occlusal or night guard splint: This is the most commonly applied treatment, especially in cases where the problem is not very advanced and mainly occurs at night. It consists of a custom-made appliance that fits the person’s teeth. It should be worn during sleep and also during times when the person knows they tend to clench their teeth, for example, in moments of high stress or concentration.
  • Prosthetic rehabilitation: In cases where bruxism is advanced and there is significant dental wear, the dentist will recommend rehabilitating the teeth with prosthetic restorations.

Don’t forget this important advice: it is essential to consider other aspects to try to prevent bruxism as much as possible. Reducing or eliminating stress and muscle tension, doing relaxation exercises, massaging the jaw muscles, and sleeping in a correct posture will help prevent bruxism from worsening.
