What is diastema?

Diastema is a term used to describe the visible space or separation between two teeth. Although it may appear in any area of the teeth, it is more common among the upper front incisors. This trait, which is sometimes considered a symbol of beauty or personality, may also be a source of concern from an aesthetic and functional point of view. In our dental clinic in Malaga and Torremolinos we know that many people do not know much about the diastema, so in this article we want to talk in depth about the subject.

What causes diastema?

Diastema can be caused by multiple factors, both genetic and environmental. One of the main causes is the mismatch between tooth size and available jaw space. When the teeth are smaller than normal or the arch is larger, these spaces may form.

In addition, the habit of pushing your tongue against your teeth, known as atypical swallowing, may also contribute to their appearance. Another common factor is the hyperdeveloped labial frenulum, that thin tissue band connecting the upper lip with the gums. If this tissue is thicker or longer than usual, it may prevent the teeth from coming together properly. Finally, advanced periodontal disease can cause bone loss around the teeth, resulting in displacements that generate diastemas. In these cases, treating the underlying disease is a priority before correcting the separation.

Does the diastema need treatment?

The answer depends on each case. In many, diastema is not a medical problem, but it can generate dental aesthetics-related insecurities. However, when separation affects the functionality of the bite or is a consequence of pathology, treatment is essential.

There are several options for correcting a diastema, depending on its cause and patient expectations. One of the most common solutions is the use of orthodontics, which allows you to close the space progressively by dental alignment. Alternatives such as dental veneers are also available, offering immediate and aesthetically satisfying results. In cases where the labial frenulum is responsible, a frenectomy may be necessary to solve the problem. It is important to note that not all diastemas require intervention. In fact, in some cases this feature can be considered a personal seal, and more and more people are choosing to wear it with pride.

Is it painful?

The diastema itself is not painful. It is a gap between the teeth that usually does not cause physical discomfort. However, the circumstances surrounding its appearance or underlying conditions may cause discomfort or pain in some cases. For example: The

  • Periodontal disease: if the diastema is due to gum problems, such as gingivitis or periodontitis, you may experience inflammation, bleeding, or tenderness.
  • Malocclusion: if associated with problems in the bite, it could generate tension in the jaw or discomfort when chewing.

How does diastema affect oral health?

Although the diastema may seem to be a purely aesthetic detail, in certain cases it can influence oral health. Gaps between teeth can make proper cleaning difficult, encouraging plaque build-up and increasing the risk of tooth decay or gum disease. On the other hand, when diastema is associated with malocclusion (misalignment in the bite), it could result in mandibular discomfort or even affect the temporomandibular joint (TMJ). Therefore, evaluating this space with a professional is key to determining whether it represents a risk or if it is simply a natural feature of the denture.
