Getting a dental implant is a very common treatment nowadays. It allows you to recover lost teeth and chew normally again. However, a very important part of the treatment happens after leaving the clinic: the postoperative period.
The days following the surgery are key for the implant to heal properly and integrate well with the bone. That’s why it’s important to follow some basic recommendations and have a little patience during recovery.
The importance of taking care after getting a dental implant
Placing a dental implant is a minor surgical procedure. Although it is usually a quick and safe procedure, it is important to remember that it works directly on the bone and gum. After surgery, the area remains sensitive, inflamed, and, in a way, “raw,” so it needs time to recover.
During the first few days, it is normal to notice discomfort, swelling, or even slight bleeding. This is part of the natural healing process. If the dentist’s instructions are followed carefully, discomfort usually decreases gradually and the implant integrates properly with the bone. On the other hand, if the area is not cared for or bad habits are practiced, infections or problems may appear that delay recovery.
Postoperative care for dental implants
After surgery, the dentist usually gives a series of simple but very important tips to avoid complications and promote proper healing.
First hours after surgery
The first hours after placing the implant are the most delicate. It is normal for the dentist to place a gauze over the area to control bleeding. It is usual to keep it pressed for about 30 to 40 minutes.
It is also recommended to avoid rinsing the mouth vigorously or spitting during that time, as this could disturb the clot that forms in the area. This clot is important because it helps protect the wound and promotes healing.
Another common recommendation is to apply external cold to the area of the face where the implant was placed. Ice helps reduce swelling and discomfort. However, it should always be wrapped in a cloth and applied in intervals.
Diet during the first days
Diet also greatly influences recovery. During the first 24 to 48 hours, it is ideal to choose soft and easy-to-chew foods. For example, purées, yogurt, lukewarm soups, or soft fish.
It is important to avoid very hard, crunchy, or very hot foods, as they can irritate the area or cause discomfort. It is also not recommended to chew on the side where the implant was placed during the first few days.
Additionally, it is advisable to avoid alcohol and tobacco during the postoperative period. Tobacco, in particular, can make healing difficult and increase the risk of complications with dental implants.
Oral hygiene after a dental implant
Maintaining good oral hygiene remains essential, but it must be done carefully. During the first day, it is usually recommended not to brush directly over the implant area to avoid irritating the wound.
From the next day, normal brushing can continue in the rest of the mouth, and the implant area can be cleaned very gently. In some cases, the dentist may also recommend using a specific mouthwash to help keep the area clean.
The important thing is to prevent bacteria from accumulating in the mouth, as they could cause infections that affect the implant’s healing.
Medication, rest, and pain management
After the procedure, the dentist usually prescribes medication to control pain or prevent infections. It is important to take it exactly as indicated, even if the discomfort is mild.
It is also recommended to avoid intense physical activity during the first few days. Rest helps reduce swelling and allows the body to recover better.
If symptoms appear such as severe pain, swelling that does not improve, fever, or excessive bleeding, it is best to contact the dentist to check the area.
