The mandibular torus is a bony protrusion found in the jaw, more specifically, on the inside and near the tongue. This condition is presented without causing discomfort to the person suffering from it.
Knowing more about the mandibular torus can help you understand why it comes out, what its symptoms are and what treatments exist. Know all the information you need to be able to identify and control this condition properly.
What is the mandibular torus?
As discussed above, the mandibular torus is a bony protrusion that is benign and appears inside the mouth. In short, it is the outgrowth of the bone structure and is found in the lower part of the mouth.
Its size may vary, being small elevations or more prominent. It is found in the lingual area near the premolars and canines.
Types of mandibular torus
There are two variants of this condition: mandibular torus and maxillary torus.
Maxilar torus
When the torus is in the upper area near the palate, it is normal that it is located in the center of the top of the mouth. Its shape and size may vary, although it usually has the shape of a line that will eventually cross the entire palate.
Mandibular torus
As we have explained, it appears on the bottom of the mouth and can be different shapes and sizes, being asymmetrical. Sometimes it is not homogeneous in shape except that they appear as small bumps which are distributed on the mucosa.
Causes of mandibular torus
There are several causes for this condition in our jaws. Some of them are:
Stress and bruxism: the mandibular torus and bruxism can go hand in hand, because if we clench our teeth on a recurring basis, we may be favoring disproportionate bone growth. Therefore, patients who have bruxism or live with constant stress are more likely to suffer from this condition.
Blows: if the person suffering from this problem has received a blow, it will have caused the bone structure to be damaged and therefore hypertrophied.
Complications in the temporomandibular joint: these difficulties in the TMJ damage the oral cavity and bring a disease to the bone. Sometimes, the improper formation of this formation may be the main reason for the mandibular torus.
Difficulties generated by the mandibular torus
The origin of some complications from this condition are as follows:
Problems with speaking: if the torus is too large, the person suffering from it will have trouble speaking well. This is especially true when the condition is located in the lower part of the mouth and ends up preventing the tongue from functioning properly.
Difficulties in the hygiene of our mouth: having an irregular shape makes the mouth not clean properly, even causing bad breath or halitosis. It is important to keep an eye on this part of the mouth, in case we need to use dental irrigators to clean the area properly.
Problems with prostheses: if the patient has removable dentures, the mandibular torus may cause it to not fit properly. When this happens it is important that the person go to their dentist and avoid injuries or sores from the movement.
Although the torus is not malignant, it is important that we know its existence and why. If you ever experience any discomfort or have dentures, consult your dentist to see what treatment options you can have.
