Dental CT: what it is and why it is fundamental in dentistry

Dental CT is an advanced diagnostic tool that has revolutionized modern dentistry. Its ability to obtain high-precision three-dimensional images allows specialists to assess bone structure, tooth position and the general anatomy of the oral cavity in greater detail. In our dental clinic in Malaga we have high technology to be able to perform all kinds of tests, that is why in today’s article we want to show you what this test consists of.

What is a dental CT and how does it work?

Dental CT is a radiographic technique that provides detailed images in three dimensions. Unlike traditional X-rays, which only provide two-dimensional views, the CT allows a more complete and in-depth view of the bone structure and surrounding tissues.

The procedure is quick and painless. The patient is placed in a specific position while the CT scanner rotates around his head, capturing images from different angles. Subsequently, a software reconstructs these images in 3D, allowing the dentist to accurately analyze each area of the mouth and jaws.

How long does it take?

One of the great advantages of dental CT is its speed. The complete process usually takes 15 to 20 seconds, depending on the equipment used and the area to be analyzed. Unlike other longer medical tests, the patient does not experience discomfort or require special preparation.

After the tomography, the images are processed and analyzed by the specialist who will be able to interpret the results in a matter of minutes.

At what age can this test be taken?

It can be done at any age provided there is a justified medical indication. In general, this type of test is more common in adults, as it is mainly used for diagnoses related to all types of dental implants, orthodontics, maxillofacial surgery and detection of bone pathologies. However, in children and adolescents it may also be necessary in specific cases, such as complex orthodontic studies, dental trauma or malformations in the development of the maxillae.

As dental professionals we know that before performing this test to the youngest, we must evaluate the need for the test, always prioritizing less invasive methods if possible.

What is a dental CT used for?

This type of study is essential in various dental procedures, as it facilitates detailed analysis and allows for more confident decision-making. Among its most frequent applications are:

  • Dental implants: before placing an implant, it is essential to assess the density and quality of the maxillary bone. The TAC helps to determine the best location and need for bone grafts in case of bone deficiency.

  • Oral and maxillofacial surgery: for procedures such as the removal of wisdom teeth included, the CAT scan allows you to see the exact position of the roots and their relationship with nearby structures such as the dental nerve.

  • Orthodontics and treatment planning: orthodontists use dental CT to assess tooth alignment and bone structure in orthodontic treatments.

Dental problems that can be detected

Dental CT is not only used to plan treatments, but also to detect various pathologies and anomalies in the oral cavity such as:

  • Dental cysts and tumors: it allows the presence of lesions in the maxillary bones that could go unnoticed with other methods to be visualized.

  • Infections and abscesses: helps to detect deep infections that affect the dental bone or roots.
  • Bone fractures: in cases of trauma, the CT scan is key to assess fractures in the jaw or upper jaw.
